Superman Returns, and I Wet My Pants
So there have been a couple of trailers out there for Superman Returns: a teaser, then a domestic trailer, and now this new international trailer, the longest and most revealing of the three.
There is no way for me to overstate this: Superman Returns is going to be the greatest movie in the history of all time. I've watched the trailer twenty times now (which is my way of saying that if you haven't, your opinion is less valid than mine) and I just don't think that I have ever been more excited about a film. Superman is my favourite hero of fiction - something about his endless capacity for good coming from a belief that mere humans have just as much of one, the way he learns from us even though he can do all of these amazing things - that makes him resonate so strongly with me. The Superman Underoos I had as a kid might have helped a bit, as well. And by "as a kid," I mean "bought last week." You know how it is.
Superman also represents something quintessentially good about America - the best parts of America, actually. He's the over-embodiment of the American Dream, a man who can, quite literally, achieve anything but still chooses to help others. I'm happy to report that there are no indications at all that he captures Osama Bin Laden in the new movie, but there is a chance that the FCC fines the networks for airing these ads on account of the fact that he wears his underwear over his tights.
So next up is the relentless fanboy critiquing, maybe one more trailer, a bunch of different television commercials (cleverly, the Warner's marketing people are releasing ads that play up different aspects of the movie - romance, action, etc) and then the sneak peaks and the reviews. Finally, there' s the film itself on June 30th. I'll see it twice opening day. Up, up, and you know.

I really want to love it Max, I really do, but something just isn't coming across. Believe me when I say that I am admitting this with anguish. This will be our Superman movie. The one we get. I want it to be everything I need it to be and I just don't know if it will. I don't know if it's Routh, Lois, the overly artistic mood lighting, I just don't know and I hate that this is happening. Why can't I get giddy for this? Help me Max.
Because, Mike, you haven't watched the trailer twenty times.
